About

Dan is a 2010- 2012 IRCHSS Government of Ireland Doctoral Scholar. He was the first candidate to enter UCD's European Law and Governance PhD Programme and is now in his third year.

Dan's research investigates how branding and promotional activities are used strategically by regulators to help them achieve their goals. It draws on examples from commercial organisations, public bodies and NSMD (Non- State Market Driven) regulators where the regulatory regime operates as a brand through market mechanisms. The research includes four case studies of public and private regulators in two jurisdictions to understand whether branding and how branding and promotional activities are used by public and private regulators. As part of this research, Dan has spent time working with The Competition Authority and the Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland

Completion of this research will offer a better understanding of how regulators relate with and respond to the demands of the different groups with which they interact and to whom they are responsible.

This research draws on literature in the fields of Regulation, Law, Political Science and Business. His research is supervised by Professor Colin Scott.
