About
I am a IRCHSS CARA mobility postdoctoral fellow, currently working on a three year project entitled 'The post-war generation: Growing up and coming of age in 1950s Italy'. I am based at the Università degli studi di Milano for two years (2011-2013) and will then be back at UCD for the academic year 2013-2014. My current project mainly uses diary and memoir sources to look at how life was changing at an everyday, individual level in 1950s Italy.
From 2009-2011, I was employed as an IRCHSS postdoctoral fellow at the UCD School of History and Archives, working on a two year research project entitled 'Fashioning the Economic Miracle: A History of Italians and their Dress, 1955 - 1970'. The project examines the relationship between dress, identity and social change in the years of the post-war economic miracle, drawing on a wide range of primary sources, from film, popular literature and magazines to oral testimonies.
My first book, arising from my doctoral research, was published in 2011. Entitled 'Piero Gobetti's Turin, Modernity, myth and memory' (Peter Lang: Oxford, 2011), the book is a study of liberal antifascist Piero Gobetti and the intellectual culture of postwar and 1920s Turin. http://www.peterlang.ch/index.cfm?event=cmp.ccc.seitenstruktur.details
My research interests span the entire twentieth century and incorporate intellectual, political, cultural and social history. I am particularly interested in urban culture and responses to urbanisation, consumer society and the impact of prosperity, as well as the troubled relationship between religion and modern society.
