About

Before joining UCD School of Sociology, I taught at the Department of Politics and International Relations at Swansea University and the Departments of Sociology at NUI Maynooth and Queen's University Belfast.  I have also worked as a researcher at the Northern Ireland Assembly and at the Centre for International Borders Research (CIBR) at Queen's University Belfast as well as having done some minor small-scale research in applied and policy fields.

My main research interests are concentrated in the intersections of sociology, history, and politics and reflect my commitment to interdisciplinary social-scientific enquiry.  My  empirical research has focussed upon religion, borders, and nationalism and I am particularly interested in the relationships between polities, cultures and collective action.  In particular I think it vital that research in this area acknowledge the significance of human cultures without losing sight of the systemic operation of 'hard' structures—not least those of the international political economy and inter-state system.
